The future of work is changing faster than we can fully grasp. Many of the jobs that will shape tomorrow’s industries haven’t been created yet and some of them, we can’t even imagine. Looking back, it’s easy to see how technological shifts have continuously reshaped career landscapes, opening doors to opportunities that once seemed impossible. Now, as AI accelerates the next wave of transformation, we find ourselves at another crossroads. What jobs will exist in the AI-driven world? How do we prepare for careers that don’t yet have names? This personal reflection explores the evolution of career paths, the uncertainty surrounding AI, and the incredible opportunities it may unlock.
A personal reflection on career paths we couldn’t see
When I was 11 or 12 years old, my father told me I should learn to type — maybe even shorthand. He was certain that mastering these skills would secure my future.
I hated every moment I spent in front of the typewriter. I resisted, and eventually, I gave up.
As I grew older, he encouraged me to consider jobs such as call center analyst, hotel concierge, airline ticketing agent and many more — roles that fit his understanding of the career landscape at the time, especially for women.
But I couldn’t see myself on any of those paths. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do — but I knew one thing for certain: his vision wasn’t mine, and I rebelled against them all.
Then, when I was preparing for college, I was drawn to physics. By then, my father was wary of offering advice, but he took a chance and sat me down again.
He told me about an emerging field called Computer Science. He didn’t understand it, but he believed it could open new possibilities for me.
I listened. I took a leap of faith — and it changed my life.
At the time, roles like Web Designer, UI Developer, Test Automation Engineer, CTO, and CIO did not exist. These jobs emerged as technology evolved, expanding beyond anything we could have predicted.
Now, I see similar uncertainty surrounding AI and the future of work. And I wonder — what careers are about to be created? What opportunities will be discovered and carved out in ways we can’t even imagine yet?
AI is transforming everything — and that’s an opportunity
AI is changing industries at an unprecedented pace — faster than traditional education can adapt. It’s natural for parents and students to feel unsure about what jobs will exist in the future.
But if history — and my own journey — have taught me anything, it’s this: Every time technology advances, it creates new opportunities we never saw coming.
The internet evolved in phases, unlocking new career opportunities we couldn’t have predicted. During Web 1.0, the e-commerce explosion created demand for web developers, cybersecurity specialists, and digital marketers — jobs that hadn’t existed before. Then came Web 2.0, bringing the rise of social media, content creation, and online communities — ushering in careers like social media strategists, app developers, influencers, and UI/UX designers. Web 2.0 also gave rise to the gig economy, enabling independent freelancers, content creators, and entrepreneurs to build careers outside traditional employment structures.
At the time, we couldn’t have imagined what Web 2.0 would become while we were still navigating Web 1.0.
I believe, AI is following the same pattern. It has already created AI ethicists, prompt engineers, data curators, and algorithm trainers — but this is just the beginning.
What if AI unlocks entirely new fields — jobs we haven’t named yet? Just as we couldn’t predict Web 2.0’s impact from the lens of Web 1.0, we can’t yet see the full scope of how AI will reshape careers.
Instead of fearing change, I firmly believe that we should be excited about the opportunities AI will create — many of which we can’t yet imagine.
AI is making it easier than ever to bring ideas to life
We’ve heard it time and time again: Ideas are powerful, but execution is everything. For years, turning a vision into reality meant large teams, significant budgets, and resources most individuals didn’t have access to. But AI is changing and lowering the barriers to execution, making it easier than ever for anyone to bring their ideas to life, without the traditional roadblocks.
Today, someone with minimal coding experience can develop an AI-powered product, leveraging automation and intelligence to fill the gaps in technical expertise. AI-driven tools also allow creators to design marketing materials, write content, and shape their brand without needing a dedicated team. Operations that once required entire departments can now be streamlined, helping individuals scale their efforts efficiently.
This transformation means that solo entrepreneurs, gig workers, and independent innovators can build something entirely new without waiting for traditional support systems to catch up. AI is reshaping how people work and making execution more accessible than ever before.
Rather than focusing solely on career paths that have existed for decades, we should encourage exploration. The next generation will not just be searching for jobs; they will be creating opportunities we cannot yet imagine.
Helping the next generation explore, not fear
As parents, mentors, and educators, we must avoid pushing our children toward careers we understand — because their world will look different from ours.
Instead, we should encourage them to explore AI and AI tools in ways that excite them. Let them combine Philosophy, Virtual Reality, Music, and AI to create something entirely new, something we haven’t imagined yet.
Imagine a future where virtual reality enhances medical treatments, where AI enhances music accessibility, helping individuals of all skill levels create and experience sound in new ways, and where philosophy guides ethical AI development. The intersection of these fields could give rise to opportunities beyond anything we’ve seen before — just as past technological shifts reshaped industries in ways we couldn’t have predicted.
Success in the AI era won’t come from fitting into the past — it will come from reimagining the future.
Let’s encourage curiosity. Let’s embrace change. And most importantly, let’s help the next generation create the careers of tomorrow.
